Braydon Smith, who is also known to his mates as CharlieB, is a Surveyor by mentoring & experience, who has over 10 years of experience in the industry. He is a Queensland boy, born & bred who loves the outdoors. He is a country boy at heart who enjoys his time away from the city near the ocean or the trees. He is currently working at Vision Surveys completing all types of surveys from details to setouts to FIFO (Fly In, Fly Out) work in the country towns. Braydon began his working life completing an apprenticeship as a fabricator. By chance, he scored a job as a field hand through a family member, not really knowing much about surveying at all. Since then he hasn't looked back. With some great stories from his early years of old survey marks, great surveyors to the snakes, spiders & wild dogs. You'll enjoy this chat with my Mate CB.

It is not too often we get to sit down and talk about the surveying profession with someone who has been such a driving force in the Young Surveyors Network, but this week’s conversation gets it done! “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast caught up with Alysen Tierney, PLS, the immediate Past President of the Wisconsin Young Surveyors Network and spark plug behind the success and growth of the group. With a little arm-twisting, she sat down with Tim Burch at the recent WSLS Institute to talk about her development as a young surveyor, growing into a professional role, running a small surveying business with her husband, and starting a family through all her endeavors. Alysen shared her experiences and challenges as a young woman and mother in our profession, including taking her daughter, Atlas, in the field during her workday. She is reluctant to be called a role model for young surveyors, but she is truly a trailblazer and we look forward to see her continued success.
Lots of great insight into the world of a pioneering young surveyor who is set to take on the next chapter of her career, so tune in and enjoy the breath of fresh air she is. Thank for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast and subscribe wherever you listen to your audio selections.
This installment of “Point of Order” of the NSPS “Surveyor Says!” podcast is a discussion with Aaron Grau, Executive Director of the Association of Professional Pipeline Surveyors (APPS). Curt and Aaron discuss the beginning of the group, their goals, and why they are tailoring representation to the pipeline industry. For more information about APPS, visit their website at www.pipelinesurveyor.org.
This episode of “Surveyor Says!” features our next “Future Focus” discussion with NSPS leadership. Our guest today has been Mark Sargent, the incoming NSPS President. NSPS Executive Director Curt Sumner recently talked with Mark to talk his career, how important it is that our future generations can discover surveying, and why being involved in professional surveying associations has been an important priority in his career.
In the past, NSPS has brought you conversations with our Government Affairs about the issues, but what about the people behind the work? “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” brings a behind-the-scenes talk with the NSPS Federal Lobbyist, John “JB” Byrd. He recently joined Curt Sumner and Tim Burch for an in-person interview after our first non-virtual NSPS Executive Committee meeting in 18 months. JB shares his background into his political career to becoming a federal lobbyist; from growing up on a farm and orchard to working as a staffer on Capitol Hill, he allows a peek into his philosophy of how business, politics, and our lives in the US interact to get things done. He explains the role of lobbyist and how developing long-lasting relationships with legislators AND staffers is key to the success of our political endeavors.
Besides being able to record in a face-to-face environment, it was a pleasure to hear JB provide great insight into the sometimes-aggravating world of US politics. Thank you for tuning into this great sit-down with JB, Curt & Tim on this episode of “Surveyor Says!”
NSPS Government Affairs Consultant John Palatiello and NSPS Lobbyist JB Byrd join host Curt Sumner to review the successes NSPS has enjoyed during its 2020 legislative and federal agency outreach.
We all know about George Washington’s exploits as surveyor and President, but did you know about his business side? Curt recent sat down with author John Berlau to discuss his new book, “George Washington, Entrepreneur – How Our Founding Father’s Private Business Pursuits Changed America and the World” and how his time as a surveyor enhanced other phases of his life. John shares many great tidbits of Washington’s life that most people do not know.
