This episode will introduce you to our latest series of discussions simply named “The Young Surveyor’s Network Edition” and will feature many aspects of millennial survey professionals and technicians. Our guest is Eric Salovitch, Chair of the NHLSA Young Surveyors, discussing their recent project to determine the elevation at the top of Mount Tecumseh, a peak in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
Recent aerial surveys using LiDAR technology was used to determine the peak was 3,995 feet, not the 4,003 feet previously determined by the United States Coast Survey in the mid 1800’s. This new elevation determination puts the peak at risk of being dropped off the famed 4,000 Footers list within New Hampshire.
Eric and his fellow NHLSA Young Surveyors set out to measure the peak using modern surveying equipment and methods to confirm the elevation. This episode talks about how the Young Surveyors began and conquered their quest of Mt. Tecumseh.
This “Point of Order” of the “Surveyor Says!” podcast from the National Society of Professional Surveyors. captured a conversation with Jon Warren and Pat Beehler, both former NSPS Past President, and long-time participants in NSPS legislative efforts. Jon also serves as the NSPS Political Action Committee Chair. They help describe our specific focus on how NSPS is an advocate to not just its members, but to all surveyors nationwide. Thanks for listening!
Is Lyme the only disease ticks carry? The answer is a big “No”, but Lyme does deserve a lot of PR for many reasons. The CDC claims that there are about 400,000 new cases each year in the United States. To put that in perspective, that is 1.5 times the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and 6 times the number of people diagnosed with AIDS each year. During the last 25 years the New England area has seen a 300% increase in Lyme cases, and some of the upper mid-west Great Lakes states have seen a 250% increase during the same period of time.
The most important thing to remember is that if by chance someone is bitten by a tick and experiences a bad reaction to the bite, such as achy joints, flu-like symptoms, maybe a bulls-eye rash, etc. do not put off seeing a doctor!!! Early detection and treatment is absolutely critical. Proper treatment is normally with antibiotics which usually fixes it in the early stages. Remember, though, these diseases never go away on their own, they only get worse.

Braydon Smith, who is also known to his mates as CharlieB, is a Surveyor by mentoring & experience, who has over 10 years of experience in the industry. He is a Queensland boy, born & bred who loves the outdoors. He is a country boy at heart who enjoys his time away from the city near the ocean or the trees. He is currently working at Vision Surveys completing all types of surveys from details to setouts to FIFO (Fly In, Fly Out) work in the country towns. Braydon began his working life completing an apprenticeship as a fabricator. By chance, he scored a job as a field hand through a family member, not really knowing much about surveying at all. Since then he hasn't looked back. With some great stories from his early years of old survey marks, great surveyors to the snakes, spiders & wild dogs. You'll enjoy this chat with my Mate CB.
