Somewhere at an undisclosed location, there may have been a catch up of friends for a someone's 40th birthday...
Darren (Booth) & Tom (Casey) drove the 4.5+ hours each to be here so I thought we should have a casual catch up...
They may or may not have had a couple of beers before I arrived...
Some interesting topics were discussed. Some silly buggers had!
All in all this is just a catch up between friends caught on tape.

Welcome to the 100th episode of “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast”!
When NSPS began the process for replacing its venerable “NSPS Radio Hour” on internet radio, we knew it would take some time, work, and learning some new skills to put together our own podcast. While the format has changed, the transformation to a podcast medium has allowed us to attract more guests from around the globe and introduce many more topics than before.
This week is no different, as we meet our coordinators for the upcoming “Survey & GIS Summit” co-hosted by NSPS and URISA. Brent Jones (EP79) and Linda Foster (EP81) are leading the charge to bring a virtual conference event that has plenty to offer to the GIS and surveying professions together. Listen in on the details of the origin of the conference, evolution to today’s version, and where this endeavor can take both professions.
Thank you for tuning into “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” and listen for the question to enter into our drawing for great prizes. Simply email the answer to [email protected] to enter the drawing for shirts, hats, Yetis, and more! The deadline is enter is Wednesday, October 20 at 5:00 pm Eastern. And watch social media for more announcements about future episodes and guests!
This episode features Trent Keenan, PLS and founder of his own firm in Las Vegas. Your host, Tim Burch, recently sat down to discuss Trent’s introduction to surveying in high school, the variety of places he has completed boundary work, and how starting his current business led to giving back to the profession. He also talks about getting involved with “Get Kids into Survey” and how becoming an animated character helps connect with kids about our great profession. A great conversation and wonderful example of surveyors giving back in this “Future Focus” episode of “Surveyor Says!”
Happy National Surveyor’s Week!
Our guest this week is Galen Scott from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS). As the Constituent Resources Manager, Galen is involved with many of the tools and programs going on within NGS. He chatted recently with Tim Burch about the GPS on Benchmarks program and how important having crowdsourced data is for completing the geoid base for the 2022 datum changes. Galen also announced the new features to the OPUS programs, including a simplified way for bluebooking significant control stations AND the feature to upload RTK data to incorporate with your OPUS solutions. Lots of great stuff coming out of Silver Spring!
This is the first in a new series with Galen and lots of great things from NGS so stay tuned for even more! Thanks again for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
We are in the "dog days of summer" but NSPS rolls on with news from the legislative world! This episode of "Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast" finds your host, Tim Burch, providing an update on proposed legislation for banning certain Chinese-made UAV systems. In this episode of "From the Director's Desk," he shares the latest updates on the proposed federal bills and observations on prior federal acts affecting Chinese technology. He also notes that surveyors need to keep their eyes out on other obstacles to the profession. Thanks for listening!
One of the biggest values of being an NSPS member is advocacy, so this week’s episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast is a great way to hear all about our legislative efforts. John Palatiello, Partner at Miller/Wenhold, is the NSPS Legislative Consultant, longtime advocate for geospatial professions, and leads the overall efforts of our Joint Government Affairs Committee (JGAC). He recently celebrated his 40th anniversary of legislative representation and recently talked with Tim Burch about his career, our current political climate, and the items our NSPS directors will be discussing during the upcoming Lobby Day activities. John shared his opinions on surveyors being recognized as professionals and the importance of working with legislators to separate professional licensing from occupational licensing. He also talked about the importance of lobbying and getting our elected officials to consider the professional surveyor’s view when supporting legislation.
We appreciate John, John “JB” Byrd, and JGAC Chair Pat Smith for their ongoing efforts to represent our great profession at the federal legislative level. Thank for listening to “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast and subscribe wherever you listen to your audio selections.
As we continue to review the changes to the 2026 Edition of the updated ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey Standards, "Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast" continues with our resident guru, Gary Kent, PS. Your host, Tim Burch, spoke with Gary to discuss despite how little has changed with Section 2 "Request for Survey," our practitioners would be advised to review and make sure what is covered within this important section. A nice refresher on the standard so check out what Gary has to say. Watch this space for more sections of the updated Standards to follow soon!
This edition of “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” proudly brings a new series named “What is Surveying?” and will feature guests from all corners of the globe explaining what defines today’s surveying profession. The inaugural episode brings a titan of the GIS community, Mr. Brent Jones, URISA President-Elect. He currently oversees Esri’s worldwide strategic planning, business development, and marketing activities for land records, cadastre, surveying, and land administration. Brent recently joined our own President-Elect, Tim Burch, to discuss how technology has led to widespread geospatial data usage, advancements in the cadastral layer, and how a licensed surveyor measures up with a geographic information system professional (GISP).
This latest offering from the NSPS headquarters starts strong with Brent but look for more great guests very soon. Thanks for listening and how your own definition of surveying compares to other industry stalwarts. We hope to help answer the question of “What is Surveying” right here on the latest episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
We begin a series of episodes featuring conversations with Young Surveyors from around the world as captured at the recent FIG Working Week 2024 in Accra, Ghana. Firas Fahoum is a second generation surveyor from Nazareth, Israel with an incredible passion for our beloved profession. He joined Tim Burch for a chat to discuss his experiences, included working in one of the most historic regions in the world. A great listen, as they discussed the merging of old sacred environments now being measured using the latest in technology.
Curt Sumner, Executive Director, NSPS, had three separate interviews with the candidates for Vice President in the upcoming NSPS Elections. All three candidates shared their background and views on what makes a successful organization and can help you to decide how you will vote.
Welcome to “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” as we welcome our distinguished affiliate, the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors. Today’s conversation is with DJ Kyle, the TSPS Executive Director and Heather Sides, the TSPS President-Elect (but only for another month!). These ladies recently caught up with Tim Burch to talk about their backgrounds, how they became involved with TSPS, and how association advocacy is an important part of the profession. Heather shared her experiences with the Texas Young Surveyors, promoting the Certified Survey Technician (CST) program, and her strategic plan for taking TSPS further forward in recruiting our future generations of surveyors. DJ spoke of the promotional work, media involvement, and conference planning that she has coordinated for TSPS to help keep surveying front and center for students and young adults. Together, these ladies, along with the chapters of TSPS, are making a difference for the profession in Texas and beyond.
This episode was a refreshingly positive conversation on the future of surveying. TSPS has taken a hands-on approach to promoting the profession and the proof is in the results. Join us for an inspiring discussion of this episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
