This episode of “Surveyor Says!” features our next “Future Focus” discussion with NSPS leadership. Our guest today has been Mark Sargent, the incoming NSPS President. NSPS Executive Director Curt Sumner recently talked with Mark to talk his career, how important it is that our future generations can discover surveying, and why being involved in professional surveying associations has been an important priority in his career.
Continuing to ask the question “What is Surveying?”, this episode of “Surveyor Says! The NSPS Podcast” connects us with Linda Foster, a professional land surveyor AND GIS professional (GISP) from South Dakota. Linda was recently appointed to the NSPS Board of Directors to represent the South Dakota Society of Professional Land Surveyors (SDSPLS), where she served as President in 2019. Her degree in geological engineering opened the door to GIS for the forest service and an introduction to surveying. Linda recently sat down with Tim Burch to discuss our topic and provide a viewpoint as someone who wears several different geospatial hats. She shared her experiences with parcel mapping, data accuracy and precision in various uses, and how surveying, engineering and GIS complement each other. Linda describes how geospatial data will serve as guide not only for where we have been, but to also help us predict what data will be needed in the future.
Thanks for tuning into this next installment of our “What is Surveying” series and look forward to bringing many more viewpoints to you. Surveying has grown into much more than a measurement-based profession, and we will bring you those perspectives in future episodes of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast.
Mark Husik, Executive Director for the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors, talks with Curt Sumner about his background, including his work on a project initiated during the presidency of the senior President Bush, a variety of activities during his tenure with NJSPLS including the recent opening of a second surveying degree program in the state, and the circumstances related to the development of an in-state survey technician certification.
Hello and welcome to “Surveyor Says!” the podcast from the National Society of Professional Surveyors. This past week, the annual FIG (Federation of International Surveyors) Working Week was to be held in Amsterdam but was cancelled as another victim of COVID-19, so we asked John Hohol, NSPS FIG Chair, to catch us up on the history of NSPS with FIG. Our latest edition in our “Future Focus” series captured his conversation with Executive Director Curt Sumner. John shares about his involvement with young surveyors worldwide and how he sees their involvement as our profession’s future. An informative discussion, so join us in this “Future Focus” here on “Surveyor Says!”
Wrapping up our series in highlighting "Women in Surveying" during the March celebration of "Women's History Month," this episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast finds us talking parcel mapping and land title rights. Your host, Executive Director Tim Burch, connected with Paula Dijkstra from the Netherlands, where she is the Director of Kadaster International. Paula shared her story about growing up "below sea level" in the Netherlands and becoming fascinated with geography in school. Her core interest became cultural geography, and led to more studies in GIS and parcel/land title rights. Tim and Paula also talked about how technology is changing the ability to manage land title rights so more under-developed countries can utilize the power of GIS and surveying to establish permanent ownership for its residence. Paula also shared the importance of mentoring from all viewpoints to engage and encourage everyone within the team.
In the first Episode of the series “Get to know your NSPS Directors” Curt Sumner talks with Dick Kleinmann, NSPS Director representing the Wisconsin Society of Land Surveyors. This series will provide insight into the fact that NSPS leaders are “just like other Surveyors”, and have chosen to dedicate time to help guide our national society in its endeavors on behalf of the profession.
This episode of “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast begins a new informational series appropriately named “From the Director’s Desk” and shares the latest news and insight on upcoming events. The inaugural installment features information about the upcoming “NSPS Day on the Hill” taking place on March 30, 2022, and related activities along with more details about National Surveyor’s Week (March 20-26) and Global Surveyor’s Day (March 21).
