Abstract: Introduction: Traits of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) such as impaired ventilatory control, craniofacial abnormalities, and concomitant cardiovascular diseases are associated with modified endothelin-1 gene (EDN-1) or endothelin-receptor-subtype-a (EDNRA) gene. The endothelin system regulates the cardiovascular homeostasis. EDN-1 interacts mainly with EDNRA for signal transduction. In our study we investigate associations of EDNRA-polymorphisms (four frequent polymorphisms with an allele frequency >5%) and OSAS severity. Methods: Three hundred ninety-three patients older than 18years, of Caucasian origin and with OSAS (AHI>5/h and daytime sleepiness) were investigated by cardiorespiratory polysomnography. In addition 58 control subjects with healthy sleep were recruited ...

Conclusion'); document.write('These results suggest that some patients, who meet the current criteria for being in a vegetative state, are diagnosed incorrectly and retain thinking and awareness. False-negative (misdiagnoses due to a test being negative when someone has a condition) and false-positive results (misdiagnoses due to a test being positive when someone does not have a condition) are possible with any test. Combining tests can improve their accuracy and it is possible that the combination of bedside tests and fMRI scans would provide improve diagnostic accuracy.'); document.write('There are some points to note:'); document.write('As only one patient in a vegetative state was tested for his communication ability, this will need to be repeated in others to find how many false negative and false positives this test has. Family meals, adequate sleep and limited TV may lower childhood obesity

A new national study suggests that preschool-aged children are likely to have a lower risk for obesity if they regularly engage in one or more of three specific household routines: eating dinner as a family, getting adequate sleep and limiting their weekday television viewing time. The study showed that 4-year-olds living in homes with all three routines had an almost 40 percent lower prevalence of obesity than did children living in homes that practiced none of these routines. Depressive disorders may more commonly be related to circadian phase delays rather than advances: Time will tell

The generative phase advance hypothesis of affective disorders was formulated three decades ago. As the field has progressed, however, the evidence has generally not been confirmatory. Could it be that researchers have been looking in the wrong direction? The paper in this issue by Rahman and colleagues is the most recent to suggest that the most common circadian phase disturbance in depression may actually be a delay and not an advance.
